Ο
Ματθαίος
Τσαχουρίδης
γεννήθηκε στη
Βέροια. Σε
ηλικία 9 ετών, ο
μικρός τοτε
Μακούλης, όπως
πολλοί τον
αποκαλούν και
σήμερα,
ξεκίνησε να
παίζει την
ποντιακή λύρα
την οποία
έμαθε από τον
παππού του,
γνωστό λυράρη
της περιοχής.
Απο τότε μέχρι
και σήμερα, η
ποντιακή λύρα
είναι το
μουσικό
όργανο με το
οποίο ο
Ματθαίος
εκφράζει τη
βαθειά του
αφοσίωση,
αγάπη και
σεβασμό σε
αυτό που
υπηρετεί.
Η
δεξιοτεχνία
του και ο
τρόπος με τον
οποίο ο
Ματθαίος
αποδίδει και
εκφράζει τη
μουσική
παράδοση των
Ελλήνων του
Πόντου, αλλά
και τις δικές
του μουσικές
απόψεις μέσα
από το παίξιμο
της λύρας του,
δεν άργησαν να
αναγνωριστούν.
Σε
ηλικία 12 ετών,
κάνει την
πρώτη του
δισκογραφική
δουλειά και
ακολουθούν
άλλες πέντε.
Τον Μάιο του 1996
κερδίζει το
πρώτο
Πανελλήνιο
βραβείο
παραδοσιακής
μουσικής, σε
διαγωνισμό
που
διοργάνωσε το
Υπουργείο
Παιδείας και
Θρησκευμάτων
στο Μέγαρο
Μουσικής
Αθηνών. Αμέσως
μετά, η Ιερά
Μητρόπολις
Βεροίας,
Ναούσης και
Καμπανίας,
παραχωρεί
στον Ματθαίο
υποτροφία για
σπουδές στο
εξωτερικό.
Στο
Λονδίνο, όπου
βρίσκεται
ακόμη και
σήμερα, ο
Ματθαίος
είναι
πτυχιούχος
Μουσικών
Σπουδών του
Πανεπιστημίου
Goldsmiths του
Λονδίνου, έχει
στο
ενεργητικό
του
μεταπτυχιακό – Masters στην
Εθνομουσικολογία
και αυτήν την
περίοδο είναι
υποψήφιος
Διδάκτωρ του
Μουσικού
Τμήματος του
Πανεπιστημίου,
υπό την
εποπτεία του
Άγγλου
εθνομουσικολόγου
Professor
John
Baily.
Το θέμα της
διατριβής του
είναι «Η
Ποντιακή Λύρα
στη σύγχρονη
Ελλάδα».
Τον
Ιανουάριο του
2005, ο Ματθαίος
κερδίζει το
Πρώτο Βραβείο
του Ιδρύματος
Τεχνών
Βρετανίας, ως ο
καλύτερος
ερμηνευτής
παραδοσιακού
οργάνου στο
Ηνωμένο
Βασίλειο. Έχει
συμμετάσχει
με την
ποντιακή λύρα
στα φεστιβάλ
παγκόσμιας
μουσικής WOMAD
(Αγγλία 2001 και 2005)
και WOMEX
(Ολλανδία 2002),
στην Όπερα του
Παλέρμο στη
Σικελία για
την UNESCO
(Ιταλία 002) και
στο Royal
Albert Hall του
Λονδίνου σε
ένα
φιλανθρωπικό
κονσέρτο για
τα παιδιά του
Αφγανιστάν (Αγγλία
2002). Έχει
εκτελέσει
διάφορες
συνθέσεις και
έργα με την
ποντιακή λύρα
για το
ραδιόφωνο του BBC
και το 2004
ερμηνεύει με
τη λύρα του το
μουσικό
Ολυμπιακό
θέμα της
τηλεόρασης
του BBC
για τους
Ολυμπιακούς
Αγώνες της
Αθήνας,
συνοδευόμενος
από την
Συμφωνική
Ορχήστρα της
Πράγας. Τον
Αύγουστο του 2004
συνεργάζεται
με τον Πέρση
λυράρη
Αρντεσίρ
Καμκάρ στην
Τεχεράνη.
Αποκορύφωση
στη μέχρι τώρα
συναυλιακή
του πορεία,
αποτελεί η
εμφάνισή του
στο Ηρώδειο
για την έναρξη
του φεστιβάλ
Αθηνών 2005. Εκεί
ερμηνεύει με
την ποντιακή
λύρα
συνθέσεις του
Μίμη Πλέσσα
υπό τη
διεύθυνσή του
και τη
συνοδεία της
Ορχήστρας
Συγχρονης
Μουσικής της
ΕΡΤ. Ο Ματθαίος
εκτός από
ποντιακή λύρα
παίζει και
άλλα έγχορδα
μουσικά
όργανα όπως
βιολί, λαούτο,
ούτι,
μπουζούκι,
κιθάρα,
Ιρανική λύρα,
Αφγανικό
ρεμπάπ, καθώς
επίσης και την
Αφγανική και
Ουζμπέκικη
λύρα.
Matthaios Tsahourides
was born in
Veria
,
Greece
. Growing up in an environment of a splendid and fertile musical tradition,
soon, already at the age of 9 he had made his mark as a perceptive performer
and a sensitive interpreter. The Pontic lyra is by far the instrument, which
express his deeply felt devotion and respect for the music he loves and
serves.
His
original temperament and his amazing dexterity in playing the traditional
instruments have been widely praised, culminating to his winning the First
Prize in a Pan-Hellenic Music Competition, organized by the Greek Ministry of
Education at the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron Mousikis) in 1996. In 1997, he
was awarded a scholarship by His Eminence Mr Panteleimon and Iera Mitropolis
Verias, in order to continue his music studies in
London
.
By
the year 2001, Matthaios had
successfully completed his Bachelor Degree in Music Studies and his Masters in
Ethnomusicology at
Goldsmiths
College
,
University
of
London
. He is currently a PhD student in Performance Practice at Goldsmiths College
Music Department, under the supervision of Professor John Baily. In 2003 he
was awarded a scholarship by the ‘Michael Marks Charitable Trust’ for his
Doctoral research in the field of Performance Practice.
In
January 2005, Matthaios won the Arts Foundation Fellowship Award 2005
of
Britain
, as the best
UK
based instrumentalist, working in a non-western musical tradition. He
has also performed the Pontic lyra at WOMAD music festival in Reading (England
2001 and 2005), WOMEX music festival in Rotterdam (Holland 2001), Roskilder
Rock festival (Denmark 2002), in Teatro Massimo for UNESCO (Palermo Opera
House, Italy 2002), at Royal Albert Hall (in a Charity concert for the
children of Afghanistan, London 2002) and at the Purcell Room in London’s
Southbank Arts Centre. He performed the Pontic lyra for BBC Radio 3, as well
as in many other BBC radio programmes. In August 2004, he performs the main
music theme of the BBC for the Olympic Games of Athens with the opera band
Amici and Prague Symphony Orchestra. He has also collaborated with Ostad
Ardeshir Kamkar on the Persian kamancheh in
Tehran
(August 2004). In May 2005, he performed at
Herodus
Atticus
Theatre
in Acropolis,
Athens
, accompanied by ERT Contemporary Music Orchestra in the opening ceremony of
the Athens Festival and in June 2005 he performs the Oratorio ‘Kosmas o
Aitolos’ (by Mimis Plessas).
Matthaios has
shown a great interest in the string family of the musical instruments; he
plays instruments such as the violin, laghouto (Greek lute), oud, the Greek
bouzouki, guitar, the Persian kamancheh, the Afghan rubab, as well as the
Afghan and the Uzbek ghichak. Having participated in many music concerts and
recordings, Matthaios has
managed to put forward a personal statement over the musical tradition he
embraces and to which he has devoted his life.
